Localizing Grocery in Detroit & Chicago
Whole Foods wanted to create a “city right” concept emphasizing local signature icons that pay homage to each stores’ location. The Detroit & Edgewater, Chicago Whole Foods live up to these principles not only in what they purvey, or through the associates in the stores, but with the environment and buildings in which they conducts business as well.
Design partners, local artists and fabricators joined with the Detroit Whole Foods team to create a fusion of food and place through reclaiming, repurposing, and reimagining to create a natural, yet “downtown” sensibility. The store features an expanded assortment of prepared and ready-to-prepare foods, with a broad assortment of fresh and specialty perishables that becomes the “city kitchen” for young urban residents, neighborhood consumers, and the working population.
The Edgewater, Chicago store succeeds in combining both the “edge” and “water” into a one-of-a-kind environment that draws on the playful and artistic license of the city’s 1920s & 30s resort origins. Typography and large grid frames play heavily into the design motif, drawing inspiration from the neighborhood and its rooftop signs & advertisements. Both are low-tech in character, but sophisticated in outcome.
